My 2 Yr Old Male German Shephard is Skinny?
I took him to the vet, and they said he has IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome). Vet had given us Meds and even Steroids. The Steroids are to gain his weight plus the prescribed food the vet had given us as well (Royal Canine High Fiber). We have given him all the meds as described and fed him that food for over about 2 months.
I don’t see any changes, he is still very energetic, playful and himself. But no weight gained. He was 90lbs before 2yrs old, now he is 70lbs. I did some research, and some people say that is normal for GSDs but how come I see police GSDs that are looking normal and my dog looks malnurished? We have a big backyard, so he gets alot of exercise too. I also changed his food. 1) becuase the Vet dog food was expensive. 2) It wasnt doing anything. I switched to Royal Canine for GSDs. Had alot of good reviews about it. I have been giving him this food for 2 weeks. I don’t know if its going to work, but I wanted to Post this to see if anyone had same issue.
I know how frustrating it can be. I have owned 3 German Shepherds. I have never had the issue of them not gaining weight but currently I have that issue with my Clumber Spaniel. Just like us he maybe burning more calories than he is taking in. Royal Canin is excellent. I have show dogs and that is my food of choice. However you may want to consider switching to Royal Canin Special Medium 25. It is for a more active dog and has a higher calorie content. That is what I did and now my dog is gaining. Also make sure you give a good vitamin, I give Pet Tab Plus. Also a fish oil with Vitamin D. Stay with Royal Canin it’s an excellent food. Vets do not spend much time in Vet. school on nutrition, that is your responsibility and it sounds like your doing a good job. Petsmart always has Royal Canin. Let me know how he is doing. I have other things that could work as well. But try the food first. It has a great smell too. My dog loves it, finally.
